Mangrove
Eco Camp (Tanjong Piai, Johor)
Tanjung Piai is situated in the
district of Serkat (scenic, rustic coconut groves
and traditional malay villages) near Kukup, Johor.
This newly opened National Park consists of about
4,500 hactares of mature and regenerating mangrove.
This
is an important step by the Johor Government to
preseve this unique ecosystem in Johor. The Johor
National Park Corporation has been appointed to
set up and run the Park, HQ and other facilities.
The Park features a one kilometre boardwalk with
bird hides amidst the mangroves. The mangrove consist
of mixed mature and young trees mostly Avicennia.Canals
and coconut groves acting as buffers lessen further
erosion from the strong sea current.
Tg Piai is the southern most
tip of the Asian continent geographically. Tg
Piai Eco Camp is located within the national park.
Camping is done on raised platforms in the mangroves.
Fireflies watching is an interesting programme
around the campsite at night. There are also private
chalets build over the water of the Straits of
Johor owned by EOA business associates. A local
restaurant and seminar room is available at the
chalet site ideal for corporate retreat and function.
The
birds commonly seen and heard are Lesser Adjutant,
Mangrove Pitta, countryside birds, waders, raptors
etc on the mudflat at the park. Brahminy Kite,White-bellied
Fish-eagle as well as Changeable Hawk-eagle were
seen nesting at the park. If time permits, a visit
to the Bugis early settlers musuem will be arranged.
