Pulau Ubin, the most
famous island in the North-East of Singapore
is the last bastion for nature in Singapore and is about
400 hectares in size. This island has so far escape
the relentless development so apparent in the rest of
Singapore. Here is the last extensive place where the
old world, rustic kampong scenery still remains where
aquaculture ponds, fruits orchard, coconut groves, secondary
forests, rubber plantations and shady, winding lanes
occur.
The island has abundant flora and wildlife
especially birds. There are 120 over species of birds
found here including migrants and resident species that
is about one third the total number of bird species
found in Singapore. Ubin Island is also rich in mammal
life as well as corals and marine life.
Ubin is home to some most vulnerable
birds of Singapore such as the Mangrove Pitta, Mangrove
Blue Flycatcher, Black-naped Monarch, Buffy Fish Owl
and the Globally endangered Straw-headed Bulbul. It
is also the best and only location to see the Oriental
Pied Hornbill and Red Junglefowl in Singapore.
The mammals found here are the Long-tailed
Macaques, Wild Pigs, House and Indian Civets and Malayan
Flying Foxes. The Northern coast is the haunt of the
Dugong, a sea mammal now considered endangered in this
region. Wild elephant, tapir and tiger were reported
to have swum across from Johor in the past.
The eight by two square kilometres
island have lot to offer and explore. Network of country
road connected every corner of the island provide visitors
opportunities to explorer the island by foot, mountain
bike and van converted taxi. Another attraction of Ubin
is the Che Jawa Coast that is rich
in marine and coral life that exposed during low tide.
The idle town centre of Ubin reflected
the lifestyle of Singapore in the 50s and 60s. Bicycle
rental shops, seafood restaurants, old-style coffee
shops, untidy kept provision shops, a Chinese temple
and a Chinese opera stage set the ambience of this tourist
attraction as compared to the commercialised Sentosa.
The best way to go is engaging our
experienced Nature Guide for an eco exploration on foot
enjoying the charms and ambience of Pulau Ubin.
